Guest Lecture on “Antimicrobial Resistance”

Event category Guest Lecture
About Event Antibiotics have become the cornerstone for the treatment of infectious diseases and contributed significantly to the dramatic global health development during the last 70 years. Millions of people now survive what were previously life-threatening infections. But antibiotics are finite resources and misuse has led to antibiotic resistance. Misuse refers to use without need, use without prescription, self-medication, irregular or interrupted dosing or sharing of antibiotic.

The World Health Organization rates antibiotic resistance as a ‘global security threat’ impacting on global health, food security and development and as important as terrorism and climate change. The continuing emergence, development and spread of pathogenic organisms that are resistant to antimicrobials are a cause of increasing concern. New resistance mechanisms are emerging and spreading globally, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases. A growing list of infections – such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, blood poisoning, gonorrhoea, and foodborne diseases – are becoming harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat as antibiotics become less effective. So its control requires knowledge of factors causing antimicrobial resistance, good attitudes towards the intervention strategies as well as changes in antibiotic prescribing behavior of health workers.

This lecture will help paramedical and nursing students to get knowledge towards antimicrobial resistance and their antibiotics prescription practices. This will not only support patient care but also foster economic growth and national security
